The stone Palace Gate
gives way to the palace
courtyard. Its left pillar is
surmounted with a statue
of Mars, the god of war;
the right personifies Peace.
The gate decorations were
conceived to glorify the
heroic king and warrior
John III Sobieski (1629−1696,
elected King in 1674) and
his contribution to the peace,
security and well-being of
Poland (below).
